Daily rhythm

Care basics that keep hamsters comfortable.

A good routine is simple: check food, water, bedding, activity, and safety every day while respecting your hamster’s need to sleep during daylight hours.

Daily care checklist

  • Refresh water and make sure the bottle or bowl is working and clean.
  • Offer the day’s food and remove spoiled fresh foods before they go bad.
  • Spot-clean wet or dirty bedding while preserving clean burrows when possible.
  • Check that the wheel, hides, lid, and accessories are secure.
  • Observe behavior, appetite, breathing, eyes, coat, teeth, and droppings.

Weekly reset

Clean gradually rather than stripping the whole habitat too often. Hamsters rely heavily on scent, so sudden total cleanouts can be stressful. Replace soiled bedding, wash surfaces as needed, and keep some clean familiar bedding to preserve scent.

Remember: hamsters are usually most active at dusk and overnight. Let them sleep during the day and handle them only when they are awake and calm.
