Food & water

Feed for steady energy, healthy teeth, and natural foraging.

A balanced hamster diet starts with species-appropriate staple food, clean water, and careful portions of safe extras.

Feeding basics

  • Use a hamster-appropriate staple food as the core diet.
  • Provide fresh water every day and check the drinking tube for blockages if using a bottle.
  • Give fresh foods in tiny amounts and remove uneaten pieces before they spoil.
  • Limit sugary foods, especially for dwarf hamsters that may be prone to diabetes.
  • Support natural behavior by scatter feeding some dry food.

Chewing is normal

Hamsters need safe items to gnaw. Chew-safe toys and suitable natural materials help occupy them and support tooth wear.

Avoid guesswork: if your hamster gains or loses weight, stops eating, drools, or struggles with hard foods, speak with a vet.
