Know what normal looks like, then act quickly when it changes.

Hamsters can hide illness. A calm routine and gentle handling make it easier to notice problems before they become emergencies.

Watch for warning signs

  • Not eating or drinking, sudden weight change, or unusual tiredness.
  • Noisy breathing, discharge from nose or eyes, or repeated sneezing.
  • Wet tail area, diarrhea, dirty bottom, or major change in droppings.
  • Overgrown teeth, drooling, swelling, lumps, wounds, or hair loss.
  • Unusual aggression, hiding more than normal, pacing, or repeated bar chewing.

Handling tips

Let your hamster wake up first. Move slowly, offer your hand to sniff, and scoop gently with both hands close to a safe surface. Never squeeze, chase, or wake them abruptly.

Vet note: if you are worried about a health change, contact an exotic or small-pet veterinarian. Online guides cannot diagnose illness.
