Home setup

A habitat should support burrowing, hiding, chewing, and exploring.

Think beyond “cage.” Your hamster’s enclosure is their whole world, so make it roomy, secure, and interesting.

Habitat essentials

  • A secure, well-ventilated enclosure with enough floor space to move naturally.
  • Deep, safe bedding for digging and tunneling.
  • A dark hide or nesting area where your hamster can retreat.
  • A solid exercise wheel sized so the hamster can run without arching their back.
  • Chew-safe toys, tunnels, cardboard, scatter feeding, and other enrichment.

Bedding and nesting

Use safe, low-dust bedding and provide enough depth for burrowing. Avoid dusty, scented, or unsafe materials. Nesting areas should be dry, dark, and easy for the hamster to access.

Location matters

Place the enclosure away from direct sun, drafts, loud speakers, busy traffic, and predators. A calm room helps your hamster feel safer.
